A. CATALOG DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:

A selected history of terrorism from biblical times to the 21st century. The course will focus on terrorism aimed
at the United States on foreign soil and within the borders of America. Special attention will be given to the
events of September 11, 2001.

B. GOALS:

1. This course will examine the development of terrorism through the use of violence to achieve either or both
religious and political goals from biblical times to the present.

2. This course will include a study of early manifestations of terrorist organizations including the ?zealots,?
assassins? or ?Ismailis? in the pre-modern era.

3. Special attention will be devoted to the 20th century acts of terrorism feuled by fierce nationalistic and
ideological commitments involving Palestine, Israel, Germany, Italy, Japan and ultimately the United States.

4. This course will focus on the events leading to September 11, 2001 and the impact of the destruction of the
World Trade Center on American political, economic, social and military life.

C. OBJECTIVES:

Students will be able to:

1. understand and articulate the definition of terrorism from different world perspectives

2. describe how the events of September 11, 2001 changed the U.S. perception and reaction to acts of
terrorism.

3. understand that international terrorism is not a 20th century phenomena but has historical roots stretching
into the Old Testament of biblical chronology

4. articulate how international terrorism was transformed originally from religious motivations to political
organizations in the late 19th and 20th centuries

5. trance the development and impact of terrorist organizations in Spain, France, Italy, Russia, Japan, The
Middle East and eventually The United States

6. understand the development of terrorist organizations in The Middle East and how various individuals
manipulated positions of power and leadership

7. understand the events leading up to September 11, 2001 and the immediate impact upon America
